Since the geology of this area is formed by Tertiary metamorphic rocks with various shapes and colors, the giant rocks in Fuyuan Creek are very colorful. There are magnificent cliffs upstream that even have a suspension bridge across the creek. Fuyuan Falls let out cool anions from atop the cliffs. A small canyon, with forest to either side, is the most beautiful natural landscape. The slope downstream is less steep. Its water is crystal blue and the rocks nearby are white and gray.
Fuyuan Waterfall
The Fuyuan River flows from the Danda Mountain along a majestic steep-cliff course carved by years of erosion. The main route to the Fuyuan Waterfall is a narrow 600-meter path through a setting of dense forest and colorful boulders. From the trail, visitors can view the falls descending gracefully from atop a high cliff, recalling a fairytale scene.
Fuyuan Butterflies
March to August is the butterfly season at Fuyuan, and visitors arriving at this time will discover a forest alive with their colors. There are over 98 species of butterfly here, representing nine families. The Graphium sarpedon connectens is especially abundant in the camphor woods. The Leaf Mimic (Kallima inachus formosana) is another frequently sighted species along the forest trails, though you will need to look carefully to discover its camouflaged form. The protected golden birdwing butterfly is also an eye-catching species at Fuyuan.
Ecological Description
Among the planted camphor tresses in the flat areas, there are few mosquitoes but numerous butterflies and fireflies. The complex forest includes subtropical, warm temperate and downhill forest characteristics and features as many as 421 varieties of plants in the region. In addition to the multitude of ferns such as the Tree Fern and the Rattan Fern, species such as Subcostata, Shibuya microcarpa, Common Yellow Stem-Fig, Yellow Vine and Sugar Palm can be found along the hiking trails.Visitors will find taking a stroll to the valley ridges to look around at the dangerous mountains and ravines very enjoyable.
Since the forest provides excellent habitat and food sources, there are numerous butterflies, wild birds, and fireflies. There are 98 varieties of butterflies, of which the majority includes the Common Blue Bottle, Orange Oakleaf, and the valuable Hengchun Birdwing Butterfly. Fuyuan is also considered to be one of Taiwan's top low-elevation birding destinations. Unlike forests in the West, the forest here continuously extends from low to middle to high elevation. As a result, the birds can easily move about in this continuous environment. Each winter, Yellow Tit, Green-backed Tit, Vivid Niltava, White Ear Sibia and Taiwanese Yuhina descend from mid-elevation. At the same time, songbirds from the north such as the Yellow-tail Robin also take part in the feast, joining with the melodious local Laughing Thrush, Yellow Throat, Minivet, Varied Tit, Taiwanese Blue Magpie, Muller's Barbet, Maroon Oriole, Crested Serpent Eagle and a variety of stream birds. Fuyuan is a “bird paradise” in low-elevation Taiwan. Here, the low-flying Crested Serpent Eagle and the endangered Maroon Oriole are among the most remarkable species. Fuyuan is also a great place to enjoy “lights” since thousands of Black-winged Fireflies light up the nights from March to June, with a peak population in April. Many fireflies still show up between October and December. Taking a stroll at night makes for pleasurable times.
The geology, topography, vegetation, animal resources and landscape of Fuyuan consists of forests, valleys, streams, waterfalls, hot springs, rocks, and numerous wild birds, butterflies, and fireflies. This small, but pretty place is ideal for picnicking, viewing the landscape, bird-watching, butterfly-touring, firefly-touring, mountain hiking, forest bathing, hot springs bathing, and learning about nature. With fewer tourists in eastern Taiwan, the recreational experience has become much more worthwhile. The experience at Fuyuan is particularly valuable.
