The 11-hectare park was carefully planned and designated for displays of the major works in the different phases of the artist’s career. The outdoor exhibition space is divided into Taiji Plaza, Human World Square, and Sport Square. The sculptures of his Taiji series, regarded as the best and most famous of his works, are displayed in Taiji Plaza. New North City Jinshan Shitoushan Park

New North City Jinshan Shitoushan Park

◎ Attractions:

Shitoushan Park is located on a cape protruding into the sea. It used to be a military stronghold guarding part of the northern coast, and therefore the environment is relatively better-preserved—besides the old barracks and fortifications that are still intact, there has been very little human development, preserving the rich geological and ecological resources that make this place a popular tourist attraction.

It is only about 70 meters in height, an easy walk along the trail that is surrounded by beautiful flowers and wildlife. At the northern end of the trail, there is a red traditional pavilion, an excellent place to watch the beautiful Twin Candlestick Islets.

The Twin Candlestick Islets used to be part of Jinshan Cape, but was separated from the Cape by plate movements and erosion, in the form of an isolated rock arch on the sea. Later, the top of the arch collapsed, and the present form of two upright pillars was shaped, initially called “Husband and Wife Rocks” by the local people.

Later, because of their resemblance to candlesticks, they were renamed “Twin Candlestick Islets,” the most famous geographic feature in Jinshan.

New North City Shimendong Scenic Area(Shimen Arch)

New North City Shimendong Scenic Area(Shimen Arch)

◎ Attractions:

Cut by sea waves for years and years long ago, this stone arch is among the natural wonders on the north coast, standing right by the highway. Because it looks like a gate,it is no wonder that the place was named “Shimen Stone Arch” long ago by the earliest settlers. You might like to follow the steps and get up to the top of the arch to enjoy the beautiful view of the coast.

Located at the coast of Jianlu Village, Shimen Arch is a famous tourist attraction site in Shimen District. Once a small hill formed from piling of andesite rocks and debris, the sea arch was created when the erosive force of ocean waves breaks through its bottom. Marveling at the arch-door-shaped structure of the sea arch, early settlers during Qing Dynasty named this area "Shimen", which literally means "stone arch door". After retrocession of Taiwan from Japan, the name "Shimen" was adopted as the district name of the area, and Shimen District has since become the northmost administrative district in Taiwan.

Because sea arches are formed by coastal erosion, Shimen arch should have been located at around sea level. However, due to permanent land uplift, Shimen Arch is now above 2m above sea level and no longer affected by erosive force of sea water; the sea arch therefore gets to remain in its current state. Various plants grow abundantly on top of Shimen Arch while the exposed rock wall on the side reveals its formation level. Tourists visiting here can not only find many interesting stones in various sizes and shapes but also observe a variety of geological structures.

The establishment of a ferry pier near Shimen Arch added more attraction to the area recently. Transportation Department has proposed a development project worth 200 millions in investment as the effort to promote development of industries and tourism in Shimen District.
