Wulai is a famous mountain village in northern Taiwan and is located in water reservation area. Residents are most aboriginal people (Atayal Tribe). There are high mountains along the intersection of Nanshi River and Tonghou River. Beautiful scenery is formed by the high mountains and running rivers. The place is famous for hot springs, trail train, waterfalls and Yunxian Holiday Resort.
It is said that Wulai is a term used by Atayal Tribe. It means hot spring. Thus, the hot springs here are acclaimed. The quality of hot springs is carbonic acid springs with minor base. The hot springs are clear, transparent, colorless, and odorless. The famous Wulai Waterfall is about 80 meters high. It is magnificent like a white silk cloth coming down from the sky. In addition, the sightseeing trail train is part of the uniqueness of Wulai. Trail train used to be for transportation of lumber but now it is for tourists' pleasure. The aboriginal culture center across Wulai Waterfall is a remodeled museum of aboriginal folk art. It introduces the aboriginal culture, customs and habits of Atayal Tribe and demonstrates the historical artifacts. The highlight of the visit to the center is the singing and dancing show of aboriginal people. One visiting Wulai would feel like entering into Shangrila. It is fairies land and a best place for recreation.
● Wulai Waterfall
The Wulai Waterfall with a height difference of up to 80m at the intersection of the Wulai River and Nanshi River is the most famous attraction in Wulai. Visitors are recommended to visit there in the afternoon to enjoy the glittering sunshine flickering above the water. The sound and power of the fall are also great for visitors to relieve stress in daily life.
The “Wulai Waterfall” with a height difference of up to 80m is known as “the waterfall with the largest height difference in Taiwan”. Water falls from the height down to the river valley like a rainbow. In the Japanese colonial period, it was called the “waterfall from the cloud”.
Located on the left bank of the Nanshi River, Wulai Waterfall is the representative landscape of Wulai Scenic Area. The height of Wulai Waterfall is 80 meters, while the width is 10 meters. The white falling water is natural and spectacular that earned it the name "Yun-Lai-Zhi-Long" in Japanese colonial period. When there is abundant rainfall, Wulai Waterfall will be divided into two waterfalls, pouring all the way down from the valley, forming clouds and fog, creating a romantic atmosphere.
● Wulai Scenic Area
Wulai District is located in the southeastern part of Taipei County at the confluence of the Nanshih River and Tonghou River. With its picturesque valleys, forests, rivers and high mountains, Wulai it is known as the "back garden of the greater Taipei area." Wulai is also a popular hot spring destination. The springs here are fed by slightly alkaline carbonic acid water that is clear, potable and bubbles out at a temperature of about 80 degrees centigrade.
Located in New Taipei City (Taipei County), Wulai is a beautiful small town surrounded by spectacular mountains ranges, running rivers, and hot springs, and is the only indigenous district in the suburb of Taipei City.
Being the main hot spring spot of Greate Taipei, Wulai is an excellent spot to visit in winter time. Sceneries are fascinating throughout whole year as well. In spring, Wulai is a perfect place to view various kind of Japanese Flowering Cherry. The colorful scene make tourists fall in love with Wulai. In summer, family camping and fishing by rivers in Wulai are good choices cooling off in hot and humid weather. Maple leafs and waterfall in autumn also make Wulai a must visit tourist attraction. Within the water reservation area, Wulai features wonderful sceneries of hot springs, railways, waterfalls, gondola, and Yunhsien Holiday Resort.

Take Xindian Bus (Taipei-Wulai route bus no. 849) from Taipei Main Station at Chingdao W. Road or MRT Xindian Station to Wulai Bus Terminus. From there, it's only a 3-5mins walk to the destination.
○ By MRT:
Take Taipei MRT-Xindian Line to MRT Xindian Station and take Xindian Bus (Taipei-Wulai route bus no. 849) to Wulai Bus Terminus. The travel time from MRT Xindian Station to Wulai is about a 40mins ride.
